The Canadian Federation of University Women - South Delta presented its annual bursaries to five local women this week.

Each year the club holds an event to raise money for the bursaries and then advertises in the spring for candidates. Winners are selected in early June and are presented with their cheques at the September meeting.

This year's high school winners of $1,000 each are Janessa Tom, a recent graduate of South Delta Secondary who is now attending UBC in pharmaceutical sciences, and Shania Chand, a Delta Secondary graduate who is now attending SFU.

The $1,000 community bursaries, awarded to mature students continuing or returning to post-secondary studies, are Rebecca Griffing, a student at the University of Alberta on her way to becoming a doctor, Holly Walker, a BCIT student in nursing, and Janelle Dodds, an SFU student of linguistics.

The Canadian Federation of University Women - South Delta is a charitable organization that raises funds to support the education of women in the community. It was established in 1966 and is one of 123 clubs in Canada.

Aside from fundraising, the group has many interest groups - bridge, book, travel, walking issues - that meet at various times each month. The monthly meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday at 7:15 pm at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen.

This year's fundraising event will be a concert. For more information, call 604-948-1250.
