A local professional engineer is being recognized for his achievements in the field.

Longtime Ladner resident Meiric Preece received a Meritorious Achievement Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists at its annual conference in Kelowna this month.

The annual President's Awards are the province's top awards for professional engineers and geoscientists.

Throughout his career, Preece has had an impact on many of the major rapid transit projects in the Lower Mainland, including the Canada Line, which was constructed to expand SkyTrain to Richmond and Vancouver International Airport in time for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Preece specializes in guideway design and is currently the technical director for the contractor working on the Evergreen Line SkyTrain expansion to Coquitlam and Port Moody.

His work has resulted in several award-winning projects, including the Millennium Line and the Tsable River Bridge, near Courtenay on Vancouver Island.

Preece also shares his knowledge and expertise in the industry through presentations to engineering organizations and student lectures at BCIT and UBC.
