BIA requires public's help to pick flick for 1st summer movie night

Three choices available as popular series returns for its fifth year

The Business Improvement Association (BIA) of Tsawwassen needs help picking the flick.

The BIA, which is organizing the fifth annual Tsawwassen Outdoor Movie Nights, is turning to the community to choose the film to be featured on the first of three nights this summer.

"Two of our sponsors have now confirmed their choices for this year's movie nights," said BIA executive director Ana Arciniega.

On Saturday, Aug. 11 at Diefenbaker Park, Michelle Laviolette of Vancity chose to show The Lion King.

"This day is like no other movie night we have hosted before, as it will also be the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Party. We will have dancing and treats from across Britain, so it should be extremely exciting," explained Arciniega.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, the night of the block party, and sponsored by the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, the BIA will feature Night at the Museum.

"This is going to be a great night, with a live stage featuring local performances, lots of games and activities," said Arciniega.

"The movie is a lot of fun and will appeal to a wide audience."

That leaves the first night, Saturday, July 28 at Diefenbaker Park, open for the community's input.

Co-sponsors Randy's Tirecraft Auto Centre and Tsawwassen Collision have chosen the following options for people to vote for: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Goonies and The Wizard of Oz.

"The key to the success of these events is the right choice of movies," said Arciniega. "There are so many options - we like to know what our community thinks would make a great evening under the stars."

Voting will take place from May 1 to 18 through the BIA website at www.shoptsawwassen. com, on Facebook at the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association page or at any of the coffee shops in Tsawwassen (Blenz, Petra's, 56th Café, JDR Café, Ambiente, Beach Grove Cafe and Starbucks).

All those voting will enter for a chance to experience the movie in a special way.

"The winner of our contest will have VIP seats on the hill, in the best spot in front of the screen," said Arciniega. "We will cordon off an area for the winner and 15 of his/her friends.

Plus, they will get a round of popcorn on us!"

All movie nights are free family events that include activities, demonstrations, food and entertainment starting at 6: 30 p.m., followed by a popular feature film that will be shown on a three-storey inflatable screen. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebration on Aug. 11 will start at 5 p.m.

Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs, blankets, warm clothing and flashlights. In case of extreme weather, the events will be rescheduled.
