Browns expands Pyjama Drive once again

What started in Richmond three years ago has spread to almost two dozen locations across Western Canada

Browns Socialhouse is gearing up once again for its fourth annual The Christmas Pyjama Drive.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, during operating hours, Browns Socialhouse is inviting all its guests to bring a new pair of pyjamas (sizes newborn to 16 years) to any of its locations in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, including the Tsawwassen location. The pyjamas will be donated to local Christmas bureaus and charities to be passed along to families in need this holiday season.

As a thank you, Browns Socialhouse will offer pyjama donators 50 per cent off their food bill during their visit.

The Christmas Pyjama Drive was born in 2010 out of a unique idea by thensix-year-old Reese Shelly, son of Browns franchisee Todd Shelly, to help make Christmas a little brighter for disadvantaged children.

With the help of family and friends, Reese collected 365 pairs of pyjamas as his father hosted the inaugural Pyjama Drive at Browns Socialhouse in Richmond.

In 2011 the Pyjama Drive expanded to a second location at Browns Panorama in Surrey and between the two venues, more than 1,420 pairs were donated.

In 2012, the third annual event took yet another huge leap as all Browns locations in B.C. - as well as

Scotty Browns in Bellingham - joined in the charitable venture and collected more than 2,250 sets of PJs.

The snowballing success of the community outreach initiative looks to pick up even more momentum this year as, for the first time, the Christmas Pyjama Drive goes franchise-wide, with nearly two dozen Browns locations across Western Canada and Washington state taking part.

*** Several Delta chartered accounting students recently passed the national Uniform Evaluation (UFE).

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C. and the CA School of Business announced that nine Delta students were among the more than 450 completing the exam over three days in September.

The local students completing the exam were: Jason Athwal (PRA Group Ltd.), James Demello (Sadler Weismiller Group), Jordan Laker (Davidson & Company), Yung Shen Lin (Johnsen Archer), Harmeen Malhi (PwC), Sean McInnes (Deloitte), Carrie Mitchell (KNV LLP), Arish Udwadia (Manning Elliott LLP) and Christian Von Saarn (KPMG).

In order to become a designated chartered accountant, students must complete rigorous course work, pass the UFE and work for 30 months in an approved training office. The national UFE ensures that all Canadian CAs meet the same high standards, which are recognized nationally and internationally.

"App users can spot seasonal offerings on our Reserve & Pickup services and early previews of favourite products that have just arrived in store," said Christian Arbez, Thrifty Foods' manager of online shopping, web services and customer care.

The Thrifty Foods app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
