Two local moms who met at a pre-natal yoga class have turned their friendship and love of fitness into a business.

Tanya Armstrong and Haley Pacaud started the 21 Day UGI Challenge to give busy moms like themselves another option to get fit and stay active.

The challenges, which run several times a year with the last one before summer set to start on Monday, combine intense 30-minute workouts three times a week with a nutrition plan designed by holistic nutritionist Keyrsten

McEwan. After each workout, participants also receive a fresh salad prepared by local chef Joanne Lechner of www.batchfood. com.

"They're amazing salads," said Pacaud. "They're so good."

The workouts use a made in South Delta invention, the UGI, which was designed by Tsawwassen personal trainer Sara Shears, and is based on a classic piece of gym equipment: the medicine ball. The UGI was designed as an all-in-one training tool that takes participants through a warm-up, cardio, strength conditioning, balance work and cool down. Shears also developed a 30-minute program that incorporates a series of efficient one-minute exercises.

Armstrong and Pacaud trained with Shears and started offering the 21 Day UGI Challenge at Armstrong's Ladner studio.

"It's a challenging workout," she said. "You need to work that hard to see results."

The pair of busy moms said they fell in love with the UGI system because it gave them a quick but effective workout.

"We can squeeze it in, so other people can squeeze it in," Armstrong said.

She added that childcare is provided during Monday, Wednesday and Friday sessions. The 21 Day UGI Challenge is offered every two months with a break in the summer.
