Chung tradition lives on

A local family's legacy in Ladner is continuing with the opening of a restaurant.

Chung's Fish and Chips opened last summer on Delta Street in the heart of Ladner Village and has seen lots of support from the community so far, says executive chef and operator Cheryl Chung.

The Chung family has been a part of the community since grandfather Chung Chuck came to Canada at the age of 13.

Chung Chuck was a well-known potato farmer and ran two local restaurants.

The family has also spent 50 years in the local fishing industry, so opening a fish and chips restaurant just made sense.

The menu at Chung's Fish and Chips has a lot more to offer than just fish and chips, however. There are the shrimp cakes, which are quite popular, Chung says, as well as fish tacos, calamari, popcorn shrimp and a variety of other dishes. Chung's also offers a seared ahi tuna on Fridays and Saturdays.

The key is freshness, Chung says, and all ingredients are sourced locally. The restaurant makes salsa for its fish tacos daily and both the tarter sauce and coleslaw are made in-house.

"We strive to provide the best quality ingredients and keep it local," Chung says.

All the fish on the menu is wild and staff members spend two to three hours every day cutting fish fillets and chopping potatoes for French fries.

Another popular menu item is the family dinner, which comes in options for three, four or six people.

Chung says the restaurant, which offers a cozy atmosphere, is also planning to offer breakfast.

On Mondays all seniors get 20 per cent off while Tuesdays feature all-you-can-eat fish and chips from 11 .m. until 5 p.m.

"We really want to thank the community," Chung says. "Their support has been great."
