Delta's industrial parks making strides on crime and safety

Companies in Delta's Annacis Island and Tilbury industrial parks are considering the cost burden of crime not only to themselves, but to property management companies as landlords are forced to hire additional security patrols to battle crime.

Companies in Delta's Annacis Island and Tilbury industrial parks are considering the cost burden of crime not only to themselves, but to property management companies as landlords are forced to hire additional security patrols to battle crime.

This further insight into the extent of crime in the industrial parks comes from meetings coordinated by the Delta Chamber of Commerce with industrial park businesses and Delta police, which began last September.

Two further meetings of business leaders, police and the chamber since then have also identified the role of insurance companies and security services in the approach businesses could take in crime reduction.

"The business action team is now looking at a system which will enable all businesses to share their experiences and recommendations, and tap into international knowledge, in reducing local crime," says David Turbitt of Revolution Engine Corporation, who is also a chamber board director.

"The team is also looking at returning to a Business Watch, which previously operated in the industrial parks, similar to a community neighbourhood watch. Thanks to the businesses which have stepped forward to lead this process, and to the Delta police for their support in tackling this barrier to business."
