Destination wedding firm signs deal with Princess

Ladner's Royal Ocean Events inks five-year agreement

A Ladner-based cruise ship and destination wedding planning company landed a big deal with Princess Cruises last week.

Royal Ocean Events Inc. will be looking after shipboard weddings at sea for Princess thanks to a fiveyear agreement.

Company president Tonia Scurr said it's "quite a feather in our cap" for the business.

"It's an achievement. I never thought we'd ever end up doing anything like this," she said. "We were quite happy with what we had and this has turned out to be something really exciting for us all."

Royal Ocean, which has been in business for 15 years, has doubled its Delta staff with the addition of five employees, she noted.

Scurr said Princess Cruises are able to have weddings at sea because its ships are registered in Bermuda.

The ship's captain performs the ceremony, she explained, adding that brides married in international waters will have a Bermuda marriage licence.

Chris Scurr, the company's director of marketing, said the contract is worth about $10 million over the five-year term.

Royal Ocean also coordinates weddings, although not at sea, for other cruise lines such as Carnival, Holland America and Regent Seven Seas.

Princess Cruises is the third largest cruise line in the world with approximately 1.3 million passengers each year travelling aboard a fleet of nearly 20 vessels, the company's website states.
