Thrifty Foods' annual Food For Families food drive began this week in all its 29 stores, including its Tsawwassen location.

"The program provides Thrifty Foods customers with the option of adding a $5, $10 or $20 Food For Families gift voucher to their grocery order, funds that are then transformed into fresh groceries for those in need in our communities," says Thrifty Foods general manager Jim Dores.

"What impresses me so much is that our customers - who have families of their own to feed - come forward each year and reach out to provide complete strangers with access to nutritious and wholesome food during the holidays."

In 2011, the Food For Families fundraiser provided $206,000 to local food banks and has provided over $800,000 since the program began.

The annual fundraiser supports the South Delta Food Bank along with 15 other food banks in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and on Saltspring Island.
