Manpower is forecasting a hopeful hiring climate in Delta and Richmond for the first quarter of 2015.

"Survey data reveals that 20 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (January to March), while 10 per cent anticipate cutbacks," said Jeff Polkinghorne of Manpower's Vancouver office.

Another 67 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter, while three per cent are unsure of their hiring intentions.

"We are seeing some cautious, though positive, signs in the labour market in Canada, with employers expecting a fair hiring pace for the coming quarter," said Michelle Dunnill, Manpower area manager for Toronto, Mississauga and Markham.

A Delta-based business has been named a semifinalist for the 12th annual Small Business BC Awards.

Amando Natural Stone has made the top 10 nominees in the Best Immigrant Entrepreneur category.

Entrepreneur Karina Eva, who immigrated to Canada from Mexico, founded Amando Natural Stone in 2009 with the goal of collaborating with construction professionals to bring Mexico's handcrafted natural ornamental and architectural stonework to Canada.

From Oct. 1 to Nov. 30, British Columbians were asked to nominate and vote for their favourite small businesses. Amando Natural Stone was nominated in two other categories as well, Best Company and Best International Trade, and made the top 10 for Best Immigrant Entrepreneur.

The businesses named to the top 10 in each category will now move forward to face a panel of judges, who will narrow down the competition to five finalists. The finalists will be announced on Jan. 30 and then each nominee will be invited to give a Dragon's Den-style pitch to a panel of judges on why they should be named the best in B.C. Winners will be announced Feb. 26 at the Small Business BC Awards ceremony in Vancouver.

Local realtors once again took part in the annual REALTORS Care Blanket Drive.

Now in its 20th year, the annual drive collects blankets and warm clothing that is then donated to the homeless and those in need in the region. This year, more than 17,000 items were donated.

Over the last 20 years, the blanket drive has helped bring warmth to more than 250,000 people and all donations remain in the community in which they were collected.

The blanket drive is an annual partnership between realtors in Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
