The Matador Barbering and Hairstyling recently got a new lease on life to celebrate a milestone.

Owner Gianni Mazzei revamped the interior over three days last month and gave the shop a whole new look in honour of its 40th anniversary.

Mazzei's father Frank, who was also a barber, started the Tsawwassen institution in 1972.

In revamping the shop, Mazzei aimed to give it a more modern, downtown look.

He brought in all new furniture and equipment, while paying tribute to the past by mixing modern with vintage pieces.

The Matador may have a whole new look, but Mazzei is still offering the same quality services his customers have come to expect.

Mazzei is still serving many customers who have been frequenting The Matador since his father ran it.

Mazzei comes from a long line of barbers. In addition to his father, Mazzei's grandfather was also a barber.

"There's about seven of us in the family."

The shop has remained in the family since the beginning. Frank Mazzei ran it from 1972 until 1986, then Mazzei's uncle Eddy took over from '86 until 2007. Mazzei took ownership of the shop in 2007 but has been barbering in Tsawwassen for 13 years.

The Matador is open Tuesday through Saturday on a walk-in basis. Barber Jodie Archer joins Mazzei Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The Matador is in the Tsawwassen Medical Building, 106-1077-56th St.
