A recently opened clinic is bringing a new approach to health and wellness to South Delta.

Aktiv Coast Healthcare is a multi-disciplinary health clinic that has an integrated team of health care professionals committed to improving clients' overall health, function and wellbeing.

"What we're really looking to do is improve people's overall health," says chiropractor Dr. Tyler Linn, who opened the Tsawwassen clinic in July along with his wife, Sarah Johnson, a clinical counselor.

Susan Rodgers, a registered holistic nutritionist, and kinesiologist Robert Kjemhus round out the current team. Linn said he is also looking to add a massage therapist and physiotherapist to the clinic this fall.

The range of services offered includes manual therapy and chiropractic care, rehabilitation, custom orthotics, prehabilitation, functional movement assessments, kinesiology services, clinical counseling and nutritional coaching.

First-time clients will go through a screening process to determine which team member would be the best one with which to start.

For example, Linn said, he might start by addressing a specific injury and then prescribe exercises, which Kjemhus will then demonstrate the proper form. Through his prehabilitation program, Kjemhus can prescribe specific movements and exercises to help correct muscle and joint imbalances to improve strength and mobility.

Johnson, a registered social worker and clinical counselor, specializes in helping clients deal with life stress, self-esteem, depression and anxiety. She uses evidence-based therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness therapy and supportive counseling, as well as situation-specific education and life skill development, such as assertive communication and healthy boundary setting.

On the nutrition side of things, Rodgers believes in a more whole food approach, rather than recommending supplements, and offers a nutritional coaching package.

Aktiv Coast Healthcare is hosting an open house tomorrow from noon to 4 p.m. to give current and prospective clients a chance to meet its health care professionals in a more casual environment.

Aktiv Coast Healthcare is located in the breezeway of the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre.
