Local realtor Alan Hewson is helping out those taking part in this year's Ride2Survive.

Hewson, who works out of the Royal LePage Regency Realty office in Tsawwassen, plans on donating 10 per cent of his commissions to riders who give him referrals.

He's "trying to give a little back" to something that's important to him, says Hewson, who rode in the event in 2011.

Cyclists must raise at least $2,500 to take part in the one-day, 400-kilometre bike ride from Kelowna to Delta. The fundraiser benefits the Canadian Cancer Society.

Hewson, who lives in Ladner, said he had a fantastic experience when he took part.

"For me, it was life altering to be a part of it."

Hewson, a former tradesman, was reading a newspaper one day at lunch and saw a photo of his friend in the obituaries. He had passed away from cancer.

"This was a guy I'd worked with on job sites all over Ladner and Tsawwassen," he said of his friend, noting he'd worked with him just a couple of months before reading of his passing.

"He was just gone. That fast."

A new realtor, Hewson isn't taking part in this year's Ride2Survive.

Ann Walsh, a health promotion co-ordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society, is a first time rider and said we've all been impacted by cancer.

"To have Alan think about what he wants to do and give back is really what this ride is about," she said.
