Thrifty Foods to turn pumpkins into cash

Hospital foundations to benefit from grocery chain's annual fundraiser

One dollar from every pumpkin, as well as pumpkin pies and pumpkin soup, sold at Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen will go to the Delta Hospital Foundation.

Thrifty Foods is turning pumpkins into cash for hospital foundations. Its Pumpkins for Patients fundraiser at all B.C. stores will help pay for hospital equipment in a dozen communities, including Delta.

"This fundraiser is a lot of fun and supports a vital need in all of our communities,"

said Thrifty Foods general manager Jim Dores.

From Oct. 15 to 31, one dollar from the sale of each fresh B.C. pumpkin, along with each store-made whole pumpkin pie and Thrifty Kitchens Pumpkin, Spice and Everything Nice soup (700mL), will go towards the hospital foundation in that store's community.

Thrifty Foods' fresh B.C. pumpkins - from magic lanterns used for carving on Halloween to heirloom sugar pie pumpkins treasured for their firm, sweet flesh and best used for baking - have been a key part of the fundraiser for years. New for 2014 are the in-store whole pumpkin pies and Thrifty Kitchens Pumpkin, Spice and Everything Nice soup, both of which will also contribute one dollar per sale to a local hospital foundation.
