Delta police issued 129 violation tickets during March's enhanced distracted driving campaign in partnership with ICBC.

"It's a significant increase compared to last month for sure," said DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. "There seems to be some sense that this will never happen to me or I'm not like anyone else and I can multitask while I'm driving, but this is false thinking. We are seeing the evidence of this false thinking through collisions and these lifechanging consequences. We want to avoid that."

The DPD conducted several coordinated projects, including additional enforcement that utilized spotters (plain clothes officers) to identify drivers that were using technology contrary to the Motor Vehicle Act.

The patrol division also conducted enforcement projects specific to distracted driving, although officers did issue violation tickets for a variety of offences.

"Our hope is to influence driver Asked whether Delta police considered the campaign a success, Brooks said it was difficult to measure.

"What is the measure of success - the number of tickets or the number of collisions we avoided as a result of this focused campaign?" she asked. "Success would be holding a campaign like this with a concentrated, heavy presence and coming up with no tickets. Are people changing their behaviour? It's just hard to tell."
