The city is undertaking improvements at a North Delta park in time for an event planned in three months.

A request for bids was issued for a contractor to do drainage and irrigation improvements at one of the softball diamonds at North Delta Community Park on 84th Avenue.

The project includes the supply and installation of a new drainage system, replacement of existing lawn basins, replacement of an existing irrigation controller and other improvements.

The construction is to start on, or shortly after, July 17, 2023 and is to be substantially completed by mid-September in time for a provincial tournament at the park.

Meanwhile, council last week made it official that a big pot of funding the city will receive will first be directed to a couple of major park projects.

The province recently announced that Delta will receive just over $16 million from the Growing Communities Fund. The fund is one-time support totalling $1 billion in grants to all 188 B.C. municipalities and regional districts for infrastructure projects.

The money for Delta will be used to build a second artificial turf field at Mackie Park and a new track at Delta Secondary. Details will be coming to council in upcoming reports.

Council also recently approved a $1,994,700 contract to construct the new fieldhouse at the North Delta Track, a structure which will use shipping containers as its primary building elements. The track was funded collaboratively by the Delta School District, the City of Delta and the provincial and federal governments.

Elsewhere, the city recently issued a request for bids for the construction of a new, expanded parking lot at Ladner’s Cromie Park.
