English Bluff Elementary's foyer has a brand new look to help celebrate the school's 50th anniversary.

Artist Jason Craft finished a mural last week that covers the foyer's walls.

"We thought this was just a great year to do it," said principal Michelle Smith.

Students gave input about what they thought would be important to see in the mural, she noted.

The artwork depicts outdoors scenes, including the ocean, beach, Fred Gingell Park and soaring eagles.

"We're pretty excited about it," said Smith.

The art includes the saying "Be kind, be safe, be fair" written onto a log. It's a code of conduct at the school.

The finished mural is "amazing," said Grade 5 student Ryan Hope. He added that he liked the amount of detail put into the artwork.

"I like how it's like you're on land and you're looking up at sky and the eagles," said Kate Finlay, also in Grade 5. The school is celebrating its anniversary with a carnival on Friday, May 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be a throwback theme, including games like sack races.

The Tsawwassen elementary school opened on March 4, 1964. It currently has about 200 students and around 25 staff.
