The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals to build another multi-use pathway.

The work will consist of a new 3.5-metre-wide asphalt multi-use pathway on the west side of 114th Street between 83rd and 84th avenues in North Delta.

Other works include, but may not be limited to, concrete stairs, a retaining wall, street lighting upgrades, pavement markings, landscaping, lawn basins and catch basins.

According to the city, the contract is to be awarded this July with work to commence as soon as possible for a December completion.

The city had contracted a tree service to complete an inventory and conduct an assessment of trees that are located on the street where the project is to be built.

A report by that contractor notes that all the existing trees would be impacted by the pathway installation, retaining wall installation and proposed grade changes.

There are 19 trees that are recommended for removal, but 20 replacement trees have been included within the proposed tree replacement plan for the multi-use pathway and can be worked into the development.

Those new trees would be included in the boulevard, on the east side of the pathway, between the pathway and the street, as well as on the west side of the pathway.

The city in its public consultation on the project earlier this year, said the pathway would be part of Delta’s cycling Infrastructure program.

The route has been identified for improvements as it connects to schools and community services in the Social Heart in North Delta. The road improvements are to increase cyclist and pedestrian safety, improve access to school, improve streetlight and street aesthetics.

Council last year approved another contract award of $584,000 for the Nordel Way Multi-Use Pathway Project.

That multi-use pathway will provide a dedicated off-street travel lane for cyclists and pedestrians along Nordel Way from Weigh Scale Road to River Road.

Council this year also agreed to submit a grant application to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport’s Destination Development Fund for improvements for an existing 16-km bike route connecting breweries and farm stands in Ladner with the beaches and cafes in Tsawwassen.

The “Barns to Beaches” route currently comprises a series of existing cycling segments along Delta’s farm roads and the multi-use pathway along the Boundary Bay dike.

The current route starts at River Road near 72nd Street and winds its way to Market Avenue at the Southlands.
