Big company helps out those in need in Delta

Timely gift of hot weather supplies from Amazon

Amazon staff recently delivered boxes of supplies for the extreme weather shelter at Ladner United Church.

It’s not always the size of the gift but the thought behind it that counts, such as when the Amazon distribution centre in Delta donated three boxes full of juices boxes, granola bars and bottled water to help out during the next heat wave.

The supplies went to the Delta extreme weather working group, part of the Homelessness Services Association of B.C. that helps the homeless during the cold of winter and summer’s heat.

“Having this extreme (weather) donation … my heart was full,” said Shirley Baker, who coordinates the extreme weather shelter at Ladner United Church.

The three full boxes donated means the group doesn’t have to make a public appeal for supplies, at a time when rising costs are affecting many.

“Everybody is struggling. Everybody is trying to make ends meet,” Baker said.

Baker said the donation will be given to volunteer outreach workers who will give them to homeless people. The supplies will also come in handy if the group opens its two misting centres at Deltassist and New Hope Church in North Delta.

Hot weather is expected to return this week, she said.

Baker applauded Amazon for helping out.

“They’re a big company and you don’t think a big company would do outreach,” she said. “They also give back.”

Anyone is welcome to give donations of hot weather supplies, including Gatorade, sunscreen, Freezies, granola bars and gift cards. They can be dropped off at Ladner United Church, 4960 – 48th Ave., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m, and at New Hope Church, 11838 – 88th Ave., Tuesday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“There are so many silent angels out there working to help the homeless,” Baker said.
