Boater facing impaired charges

Collision on the water near Gilligan's Island in Ladner Sunday night sends four people to hospital

A local man is facing impaired driving charges after a collision on the water over the weekend.

At around 10 p.m. Sunday two boats collided on the east side of Hart Island, which is also known locally as Gilligan's Island.

Delta emergency services, as well as the Richmond RCMP marine division and the coast guard, responded to the incident.

Four female passengers suffered minor injuries. Three were taken to Vancouver General Hospital, while the fourth was treated at Delta Hospital. All were released several hours later.

Delta police spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan said the driver of the boat that caused the collision was identified, arrested at the scene and taken to Delta police headquarters where he provided breath samples.

"He displayed obvious signs of impairment," Feenan said.

He was later released on a promise to appear in court. Feenan said investigators are recommending impaired driving charges.

The man was the only occupant of his vessel. There were nine people on the other boat.

"Both of the vessels sustained a lot of damage," Feenan said.
