Boating and booze don't mix

Delta Police continue water safety checks

Delta Police are reminding boaters of the dangers of drinking while out on the water.

Last weekend Delta Police were at the boat launch doing proactive impaired checks.

While there, officers witnessed a boater accidentally launch their jet ski over another occupied jet ski, landing on the boat launch where a boat was being loaded.

While helping at the scene, and dealing with the driver of the boat being loaded, officers detected an odour of liquor on their breath. The officer performed an ASD, resulting in a three-day immediate roadside prohibition.

“It is important to remind boaters that in British Columbia there is no difference between drinking and driving and drinking and boating,” said DPD in a social media post. “There are circumstances in which passengers on a boat – never the operator – may consume alcohol, but the captain must ensure that their boat meets certain requirements.

“If an operator is found to be driving their vessel with a Blood Alcohol Level of more than 0.08 they will be subject to punishment in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada.”
