Bragging rights will be determined on the ice

Police vs. fire in Battle of the Badges Hockey Showdown

Delta's finest will go head-to-head next month in the first-ever Battle of the Badges Hockey Showdown.

Police Chief Jim Cessford and Fire Chief Dan Copeland will lead their respective teams in a game touted to be an epic battle at Sungod Arena on Saturday, Jan. 25.

"This game is an opportunity for the community to come out and see and meet their Delta first responders in a relaxed environment," Cessford said.

"Often our first responders only meet members of the public in high stress situations," Copeland added. "We want to be able to meet people from the communities we serve without any of that stress. In the spirit of community and giving back, Delta Fire (Department)

and Delta Police (Department) look forward to showcasing their skills in a competitive charity hockey game."

During the first and second intermissions, both sides will be showing off their equipment and skills, and there will be interactive displays and photo opportunities throughout the evening.

Both departments will also be showcasing their command vehicles outside the arena before the game with an opportunity for the public to meet Delta firefighters and police officers. Traditionally, these players skate together as the

Delta Bulls, but for this one night they will be facing off against each other for bragging rights.

All proceeds from the evening will go to the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society, Cops for Cancer and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the puck drops at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for youths (two to 13) and $10 for adults (14-plus).

Tickets can be purchased in person (cash only) at the Delta police headquarters in Ladner (4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent) or the North Delta Public Safety Building (11375-84th Ave.), or at www.vtixonline.com.
