The Ladner Leisure Centre had to be evacuated yesterday morning after a large portion of the building's façade fell to the ground.

At about 10:30 a.m., a significant part of the stucco façade came away from the wall on the east side of the building, said chief administrative officer George Harvie.

The fire department stood by and engineers were called in to assess the damage.

While still early in the investigation, Harvie said it appears that stresses over the years caused the fasteners holding the façade to fail.

The debris fell straight down and not into the parking lot at the back of the leisure centre.

As of Optimist deadline, it was unclear how long the centre would be closed.
