Changes needed for Ladner intersection?

The city plans to collect more traffic data at the intersection

The city’s engineering department will take another look at a busy Ladner Village intersection.

The Transportation Technical Committee recently discussed resident concerns regarding the intersection at Elliot Street and Ladner Trunk Road.

A request was put forward for the city to consider implementing a scramble intersection, an all-walk pedestrian phase that would allow pedestrians to cross in every direction at the same time.

The engineering department noted that as part of an improvement project for the intersection in 2012, different configurations were evaluated.

The findings indicated that a scramble intersection would cause significant vehicle delays and queueing.

The committee members recommended that updated traffic data be collected at the intersection for further assessment.

Engineering staff will schedule the collection of traffic and pedestrian counts once traffic patterns return to normal in Ladner Village.

The city’s 2012 improvements at the intersection included, among other things, a corner property purchased by Delta and the KFC building on the site torn down to make room for a new right-turn lane from Arthur Drive.

The improvements, however, also did not include a roundabout, something that had been considered by the engineering department.

A staff report at the time noted the design was not pursued due to traffic delays that would exceed acceptable levels within 20 years.

There was also concern about pedestrian safety and additional property acquisition requirements for a roundabout.
