Church group headed to Jamaica to help

Youth from Ladner Christian Fellowship holding fundraiser this Saturday in preparation for trip next March

There will be a Christmas bake sale and coffee house fundraiser on Saturday to support a Ladner church's youth group missions trip to Jamaica next year.

The 13-person group from Ladner Christian Fellowship plans to head to a small community called Cave Valley for about a week in late March, said Gabriel Torrealba, pastor of youth ministries at the church.

Dan and Jen Rennert, along with their oldest daughter, plan to join their church's youth group for the trip.

The family spent a year on a missions trip in Jamaica in 2009/10.

"They're familiar with the country and the need there," said Torrealba. "As a youth ministry we wanted to take a short-term missions trip somewhere, so it made sense to go there."

The group plans to help at Cave Valley schools, including serving meals and assisting with instruction, as well as out in the community with some home visits, open house and possibly a movie night.

The fundraiser, which will also feature some live music, goes from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Ladner Christian Fellowship, 5545 Ladner Trunk Rd.
