They're inviting you to a honky tonk good time to help pay off some costly legal bills.

Residents who fought and won a tough battle against radio transmission towers being installed at the Tsawwassen-Point Roberts border are holding a fun-filled fundraiser at the Reef Tavern in Point Roberts this Saturday.

The event, featuring vintage honky tonk and swinging country music band The Neon Stars with special guests, as well as games and a 50/50 raffle, is to help pay the huge legal tab incurred by the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers during the successful fight against BBC Broadcasting Inc.

The broadcaster planned to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot in the Point, about 300 metres from the Tsawwassen border, but residents on both sides of the line fought the plan on several fronts.

"We had legal bills that amounted to $250,000 US. We raised $236,000 US, so we're down to $14,000 and people are saying that doesn't sound so bad, but we're saying, 'Wait a minute, that's a lot of money. It isn't over for us and we're still on the hook,'" said Point Roberts resident Armene Belless, a member of the coalition.

Last fall, the lengthy and bitter fight against BBC Broadcasting drew to a close when the company lost in Skagit County Superior Court.

This Saturday's fundraiser takes place from 6 to 11 p.m. The suggested donation at the door is $20.

A free shuttle will be available from Diefenbaker Park at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. with returns at 10:30, 11 and 11:30 p.m. If you're taking the shuttle, remember your passport.
