Colour switch earns approval for Tsawwassen condos

After a quick colour scheme change, Delta council was ready to approve a condo development in Tsawwassen.

On Monday night, civic politicians gave final approval to a four-storey building on the former Harris Nursery site on 12th Avenue.

The proposal was up for the approval last week, however a decision was postponed after several residents spoke out against it at public hearing. Opponents didn't like the colour scheme, which originally included pastel shades of yellow, green and blue, as well as the fact the height exceeds the three-storey limit in the area.

Last week, the proposed height was not an issue for some Delta councillors but some were concerned about the outside colour and materials.

Coun. Ian Paton put forward a motion, which was eventually approved, requesting the vote be postponed so municipal staff could work with the applicant on the colour.

The new colour scheme, which includes more earth tones, was approved unanimously.

"To me, it looks much better with lots of browns and earth tones," Paton said. "I'm quite happy with the end result."

During debate last week, Paton raised the point that downtown Tsawwassen and Ladner need design visions to avoid becoming a hodgepodge of buildings.

"I look at Tsawwassen and I think we have to have some vision of what we see Tsawwassen as going forward in the next 40 or 50 years," he said last week. "It can't be a hodgepodge of every kind of boxy-looking apartment building - this one's red and the one down the street is yellow and the next one is purple."

Some on council disagreed, raising concerns over legislating taste.

Mayor Lois Jackson supported Paton's motion and said council needs to meet with Delta's advisory design panel to discuss design elements and a general vision for Ladner and Tsawwassen.
