The Hospice Cottage Thrift Store in Tsawwassen is looking for volunteers for morning, afternoon and evening shifts on any day of the week. There is also a need for volunteers interested in books to join the book team. Please call

The volunteer "Delta Marine Unit" needs volunteers for organizing fund raising and events. Crew volunteers are also needed to train for this important humanitarian service. The Delta Photo Club presents "An Introduction to Digital Photography." Learn more about your digital camera and how to use it effectively. Delta Nats casual birding walk - A Birds on the Bay event - is set for Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Boundary Bay Regional Park from 9 a.m. to noon. Join Tom Bearss and his informal birdwatchers for a 2.5-hour amble through the beautiful natural regional park overlooking Boundary Bay. Enjoy the abundance of resident and migratory inhabitants, including shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors, and smaller birds. Bring binoculars if you have them. The South Delta Therapeutic Touch Network meets every second Wednesday at the Natural Comfort Wellness Centre in Tsawwassen. The next meeting is on Sept. 14.

Are you responsible for the care of a family member or friend at home or in a facility? Trying to cope with the changes that aging and illness bring to a loved one can be a difficult and stressful job. Delta Caregivers' Network is offering an education series and support group starting Thursday, Sept. 15 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm once a week for eight weeks. Cost is $25. Subjects covered include caregiver stress, communication techniques, role and lifestyle changes, accessing and using community resources, and legal and financial issues. South Delta Newcomers & Alumni meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 7:15 p.m. in the Kiwanis Longhouse, 1710-56th St., Tsawwassen. St. Andrews Church Delta is offering a fall Alpha course. It is a practical introduction to the Christian faith, addresses foundational questions, and explores the meaning of life. A healthy relationships and stress management group beings the week of Sept. 19-23 at Deltassist Family and Community Services, 9097-120th St., Delta. The group is for adults who are 19 and older and are self-referred. Registration deadline is Sept. 19. Call 604-594-3455 to register.

The next regular meeting of the South Delta Low Vision Support Group will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library, 47th Ave. The guest speaker will be John Timms, director of public relations for Coast Mountain Bus Company. Jim Dawe of EXIT Transit will also be a speaker.

A fall volunteer training program will take place at the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner starting Oct. 13, running Monday and Thursday mornings until Nov. 17. If you are interested in becoming a trained Delta Hospice volunteer, please call coordinator of volunteers, Chris Colero at 604-948-0660. A pre-course interview will be scheduled so that participants will have a clear understanding of the course and the expected commitments.

Family Grief Group Program - Children & Parents: Dr. Heather Mohan, RCC, will be holding a Children's Grief Group for children 5 to 12 years old who are grieving the death of a parent, sibling , grandparent or other significant person. A Parent's Grief Group, facilitated by Marg Fletcher, RCC, will be held at the same time. The groups, starting October 18, run on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:00pm every other week throughout the school year. There are free drop-in programs for children 0-6 years and their parent/caregiver at South Delta Family Resource Centre/Ladner ECD Hub at unit 205-5000 Bridge Street. The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society runs a number of units within our hospital that provide services to patients and their families as well as staff. We are currently looking for volunteers skillful in office work, merchandizing for the Dogwood Gift Shop, and food services to coordinate the Courtyard Cafe. Are you experiencing the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, a related dementia or mild cognitive impairment? The Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers an Early Stage support group in Delta that provides a forum for education and information, sharing common experiences, feelings, practical tips, and strategies. The Canadian Cancer Society Volunteer Driver program in Ladner/Tsawwassen is in need of more volunteer drivers to take patients to and from their treatment. Training and dispatch are provided. Volunteer Grandparents is a non-profit organization that does valuble work in the Lower Mainland, for families and the community. Our two programs, the Family Match Program, and School Grandparent Program allow for children without the presence of seniors in their lives to appreciate and gain further understanding of other generations, and have positive elderly role models. Strong Start in French (Franc-Depart) is a free family drop-in program for children from 0-5 years old in French, including free play, healthy snack, story time, gymnasium and more. COPS Run Inn For Cancer is set for Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at the The 'Run Inn' Tsawwassen store, 1212B 56th St. Join the staff of the Run Inn and members of the Delta Police Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley Team for this fun family event. 5km Fun Run, Kids Run and pancake breakfast with all proceeds going to pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes. Meet members of the Cops for Cancer Junior Team and support a wonderful cause. Cost will include a Cops "Run Inn" for Cancer t-shirt, run, breakfast and a chance to win some great prizes. Invite your friends and family and make this a huge event for the community!

ARTS

Calling all singers! Under the continued leadership of musical director, Danielle Hamilton, the Delta Community Choir and Tapestry are set to begin another season of choral music. If you sing and would like to join, Registration and Auditions will be held Monday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in the hall of the Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen (corner of 6th and 56th). Auditions for the DCC (our large, SATB group) are for placement and pitch only. Auditions for Tapestry (our smaller, off-book ensemble) will be more comprehensive but no prepared piece is required. South Delta Artists Guild private members show featuring the works of Lennart Osterlind, Gary Fox, Vern Hansler and Dawn Waugh. Show runs until Sept. 12. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday - Sunday. The gallery is located at 1710-56th St. Tsaww. (beside the rec centre) 604-943-3313.

Watershed Artworks Society is presenting a "Make it, Bake it or Grow it" Market on Sept. 11, (noon to 5 p.m.) called "A WHOLE LOT OF ART!" in the parking lot at ArtSpace - 11425-84th Ave., North Delta. This event marks the grand reopening of Watershed Artworks' Gallery Shop, a venue for member artists to display and sell artwork in the community. Watershed Artworks hopes that this event will grow into an annual event and expand in scope and size.

Love to sing? This fall, add your voice to The Maple Leaf Singers, a unique six-part harmony show chorus. Members from all over Metro Vancouver practice weekly and perform at a variety of events.
