Westham Lane apartments will soon be replacing and adding to their existing six rooftop telecommunications antennas with the goal of improving wireless service to the provider’s customers in the area.

Approved by Delta council during their March 7 meeting, the applicant will be upgrading the existing telecommunications infrastructure and installing two new antennas and four mounts for future service demands on the roof of 4770 52A St. in Ladner.

Though Delta’s telecommunications policy states that installing antennas are to be avoided in residential areas, the visual impact of upgrading the existing infrastructure is anticipated to be minimal, according to a Delta staff report.

“In order to meet the design criteria within the policy, the applicant has sited the new antennas to reduce the visual impact in consultation with the Westham Lane Strata Council and where applicable, equipment would be painted to match existing building façade and skyline,” said the report.

A public notification letter about the proposal was sent on Aug. 26, 2020, and public notice signs were installed on the site on Sept. 2, 2020, but no comments were received.

In 2002, council issued a development permit that allowed the placement of three antennas on the roof of the apartment building, and in 2009, they issued another permit that allowed the installation of three additional antennas.
