Crime Beat: Lost wallet in Vancouver leads to identity theft

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN

July 1, 3:14 a.m., 5100-block of 11A Avenue: Complainant reported a young white male had entered her attached garage through an open front door. When confronted by the complainant, the suspect left, taking a full box of soft drinks. Police arrived and found the suspect, who was intoxicated, had returned. He was read his rights and arrested for theft. The suspect was then transported to his residence and released to his mother with a promise to attend court at a future date.

July 3, 7:15 a.m., 1700-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported her vehicle parked in the secured underground parking lot had been broken into by smashing the passenger side window. Keys to the complainant's vehicle, home and office were stolen. Video surveillance revealed two suspects breaking the door in order to enter the underground parking lot. Incident still under investigation.

July 2, 11:18 p.m., Point Roberts border: Police called to assist with a male being held whose breath samples had read "Fail." The suspect admitted to drinking four glasses of wine two hours previous while watching the fireworks in Point Roberts. Police attended and the suspect was given a 24-hour roadside suspension. The suspect was driven home by his wife.

June 27, 2:36 p.m., 4700-block of Cannery Crescent: Complainant reported she had received a call from Canada Revenue Agency and had given her SIN number before she realized the call was fraudulent. Police provided the complainant with the phone numbers for Equifax and Transunion. Both these companies will keep subscribers informed of potential identity fraud. No money or other personal information provided to the suspects. June 27, 6:01 a.m., 5000-block of River Road: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his work van was broken into by punching the rear lock. Approximately $2,500 worth of work tools were stolen. All tools engraved with the letters "DMH."

June 29, 8:42 p.m., 4800-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported he had entered his credit card information to a website for a charge of $3.99. When the complainant went to pay his credit card bill, he discovered several charges to other websites for items he had not purchased. He immediately contacted the bank to report the fraud and cancel his credit card.

June 30, 7:40 a.m., 5100-block of Central Avenue: Complainant reported he left his vehicle and two trailers locked in his driveway and when he returned he found they had been entered. The driver's side window in the truck had been smashed and the locks on both trailers cut and snapped off. A large number of expensive tools were stolen. Forensic identification officers processed the scene.

June 30, 9:05 p.m., 7500-block of Hoskins Street: Complainant observed two males looking into the windows of his business and then crawl under the fence to the adjoining business. They stole several flats of soda pop by sliding them under the fence and placing them into a white pickup truck. The complainant provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle and several cell phone photos he had taken of the suspects while carrying out the offence. Police attended but suspects were gone on arrival. The incident is still under police investigation.

July 2, 6:52 p.m., 55B Street and Ladner Trunk Road: A complainant left an anonymous call with 911 reporting a Canada Post mailbox had been tipped over. Police attended and finding the mailbox had not received any damage, put it back in its upright position.

July 2, 1:58 p.m., 6200-block of River Road: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone had broken into the underground parking lot. Police attended and reviewed video surveillance that revealed an Asian male climbing over the parking gate and letting a white male in through the door. The males then obtained a dolly and transported stolen items from the parking lot. Incident still under investigation.

July 2, 12:04 p.m., 5300-block of 46th Street: Complainant called to say he lost his wallet in Vancouver but had not filed a report. Recently he noticed a credit card had been opened under his name. He also discovered that an attempt had been made to order a birth certificate in his name. He cancelled the credit card and the bank indicated he would be refunded for the fraudulent purchases. Police suggested the complainant request the bank to provide information as to where the transactions took place in order to secure possible video surveillance. The complainant was also advised to contact Equifax, which will flag his credit account.
