He’s had a Trek Domane road bike for a while. He’s thought about it for a while. Now, Kevin Sandy is in the Tour de Cure and planning to pedal 100 km in Chilliwack, Aug. 27.

The event is a fundraiser for the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

Sandy, who lives in Tsawwassen, has been training regularly, which includes making loops around Tsawwassen, usually in the early morning or at night, while his kids are sleeping.

“I bought this bike five years ago with the idea that I was going to do this right away. I have been putting it off, putting it off,” he said.

Recently, he was talking to a friend who leads the RGF Integrated Wealth Management Team Market Cycles Team, who asked him to join.

“I thought about it for probably a little too long and I said I’d do it, so this is the year,” Sandy said.

He’s always cycled recreationally, but not long distances.

“At this level, it’s not something I’ve done before,” he adds.

Sandy plans on carrying with him a list of names of people who’ve died from cancer, so it’s not just a personal effort, but includes others.

He lost his mother and father to cancer and two grandparents as well.

“It really affects everybody. I thought if I’m asking people to support me on this that it would be an honourable thing to carry the names of those people with me, he said.

While he’s getting ready for the tour, he’s also in the process of trying to raise the $2,500 needed to enter the event.

The Market Cycles RGF Integrated Wealth Management Team since 2008 has raised almost a million dollars for the event.
