Delta cop flies stranded friends home

A Delta police officer this week was quick to help a couple trapped by torrential flooding

The following is a good news story submitted by Delta Police.....

Yesterday (Nov. 16) a former neighbour reached out to Constable Geoff Young, asking for help getting home from the floods.

Cst. Young readily agreed, but didn’t think he’d be able to assist until he got off duty.

Then, his Staff Sergeant learned he’d been requested to fly a couple and their dog, trapped by floods, and Cst. Young was given permission to take off a few hours early for the rescue mission.

“Lisa, my former neighbour from Surrey, reached out on Facebook Messenger, to see if I might be able to help her and her husband Dean, and their dog Enzo,” explains Cst. Young.

The couple were amongst 285 people trapped for 21 hours between two landslides east of Agassiz on Highway 7. They’d slept in their vehicle Sunday night, parked under a rock face, listening to the pouring rain, terrified about the prospect of another landslide.

They and others were rescued by Cormorant helicopter on the afternoon of November 16, and dropped to safety in Chilliwack.

Once in Chilliwack, while incredibly grateful to be rescued, the couple couldn’t find any way home, as the highway and all the backroads are flooded.

“I’m so happy to have had access to a private plane so I could help them out, and use my pilot’s license for something like that,” explains Cst. Young.

His neighbour snapped the picture of him here with the Cessna 172 4-seater.

Cst. Young was a commercial pilot prior to the joining to the DPD.

And no, a pilot’s license isn’t a prerequisite.
