Delta didn't approve additional fill at farm

A story that ran in the Sept. 23 edition noted Delta council gave its approval for additional soil to be deposited at Princess Farms in East Delta.

A story that ran in the Sept. 23 edition noted Delta council gave its approval for additional soil to be deposited at Princess Farms in East Delta.

That information was based on council meeting highlights published by the Corporation of Delta, but was incorrect.

Council, in fact, voted against the application by the 104th Street farm to deposit an additional 36,500 cubic metres of topsoil.

The Agricultural Land Commission, however, approved the application.

Delta CAO George Harvie told the Optimist it's one of the reasons why Delta is looking into establishing a new soil conservation and protection bylaw to enhance Delta's ability to regulate activities on farmland.

Delta and the ALC had previously approved an application by Princess Farms to deposit 300,000 cubic metres of mixed soil. That filling activity continues, but concerns have been raised by Delta about the type of fill being imported, as well as the overall nature of the filling operation.
