Delta firefighters helped save several residents from a burning home on 84th Ave. in North Delta Monday afternoon.

According to deputy Chief Brad Wilson, firefighters were on their way back to the hall when they noticed flames shooting out from the roof of the home in the 1100 block of 84th Ave. just before 4:30 p.m.

“The guys pulled over and evacuated the residents. The people in the house were completely unaware that the roof was on fire,” said Wilson. “The occupants were evacuated from the upstairs and the lower suite.”

He said at the height of the blaze 24 firefighters were on scene.

No injuries were reported. The damage to the home is said to be extensive.

“The whole roof was destroyed and there is a lot of water damage,” said Wilson. “An investigation was done and the cause appears to be a wiring issue in the attic.”

Wilson said firefighters were on scene until 8:30 p.m. Monday night.

“Attic fires are always stubborn fires. You have to access them from the inside and push them out, so you have to tear apart all the drywall and the ceiling,” said Wilson. “Our crews did a fantastic job. It was really fortunate to stumble across it in the first place and then to get the residents out, because again, they had no idea the roof was on fire.”

Delta police assisted with traffic control in the area as well, DPD Victim Services were contacted and did assist the residents.

Once word of the blaze spread throughout the community, several residents took to social media – specifically the North Delta Community Corner Facebook group — offering help to the residents displaced by the fire.

One post said that the DPD were collecting donations at the department in North Delta, but that is not the case.

“It's wonderful to see how supportive our community is, and how quick folks are to offer help, however, Delta Police would like to clarify that we are not accepting donations for those impacted by this fire at any of our offices,” said pubic affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “We don't have the capacity to store donations. This type of assistance is usually provided by other agencies. The role of the Delta Police Department in this fire was to help ensure all were evacuated, assist with traffic control and to offer Victim Services support.”
