As winter approaches, CRERST members have started to also develop individual strategies to support their business communities through the holiday season.

Delta continues to have the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in the Fraser Health Region and is second only to West Vancouver when it comes to cases in the Lower Mainland.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control’s latest community map of cases, covering the period Nov. 14 to 20, Delta had 23 cases, almost unchanged from the previous week.

It’s also just three ahead of West Vancouver which had the lowest number of cases.

The map also indicates Richmond had 27 cases, Surrey had 159, Langley had 119 and Abbotsford had 197cases during that time.

As far as the vaccination rate, as of Nov. 23, Delta stood at 95 per cent of residents 12-years-old and up having had a first dose of vaccine, while 92 per cent had a second dose and eight per cent have already had their third.

When it comes to schools issuing exposure notices, as of Thursday, no Delta schools were on Fraser Health’s list of schools that has recent exposures.

Meanwhile, Delta council this week discussed a staff report on the activities undertaken by the COVID-19 Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Support Team (CRERST) during 2021 as well as an overview of CRERST's proposed work plan for 2022.

Formed last year to coordinate promotional and other efforts, CREST includes the city, Delta Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Delta, Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, Ladner Business Association and North Delta Business Association.

The report notes CRERST next year will transition to monthly collaboration meetings, or more frequently as required, and focus its attention on longer-term business sustainability planning, including the possibility of implementing items identified in the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy.

Containing a series of recommendations, the strategy was aimed at helping the viability of Delta businesses and was written several years ago in response to the new shopping malls opening at the Tsawwassen First Nation.

CRERST will also continue to promote the We Love Delta brand and consult with Delta staff on projects and developments occurring in the business districts.

“CRERST will also serve as a conduit of information to City of Delta, providing updates on business recovery and community resilience,” the report notes.

“The pandemic has created an opportunity for Delta's business organizations to function together, as a unified team to provide support to Delta businesses navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is anticipated that this cohesive working relationship will continue well into the future for the betterment of the Delta business community.”
