The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shops will be re-opening this week following a late December fire that damaged the donation area. That has now been located across Delta Street while repair work continues.

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary thrift shops in Ladner will be re-opening their doors this Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

The Delta Street operation has been closed since a suspicious late night fire on Dec. 27 that damaged the donation storage area.

The household and clothing stores came out of the blaze unscathed but the society needed to find another location for donations to be quarantined for 72 hours due to COVID-19 safety protocol. They didn’t have to look too far.

“We have leased out the (former) Lawlor’s Jewellery Store across the street,” said thrift shops coordinator Angie Smith on Monday morning. “We are here right now and it’s a terrific space. We’re ready to rock and roll and get back to business.”

Smith added items can be dropped off at the back of the temporary donation centre starting on Wednesday. The Delta Hospital Auxiliary will prepare the items for sale then bring them across the street to the stores.

Progress is being made on the fire damaged area but it won’t be re-opening anytime soon.

“I think they just finished up the abatement and all the clean-up will be done this week,” Smith added. “Then we will sit and wait for the actual construction to start.”

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society is a champion contributor to the operations and growth at Delta Hospital. The society donated $2.4 million towards construction of the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building that opened last March.
