A Delta man is facing a slew of charges this week following an incident in North Delta that ended after a police standoff at his home.

On Wednesday shortly after midnight, a Delta police officer was attempting to a stop a vehicle in the 9600-block of 120th St. in North Delta, when the driver fled at a high rate of speed.

According to police, the officer did not pursue the suspect, but used information in the police database to track the suspect to his home in the 8900-block of 112A St.

“The officer attended the registered owner’s address and found the vehicle in the driveway. While still in his police car, a male exited out of the suspect vehicle wielding a bat yelling and challenging the officer,” said public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “Additional officers arrived to assist, but the male was undeterred by police presence and failed to comply with police commands shouting threats as he wielded the bat toward the officers.”

Brooks said officers deployed beanbag rounds striking the male, but it had little effect. The suspect then fled and barricaded himself inside his home, his behaviour aggressive and volatile.

“Police had the area contained and started negotiations with the male and after some time he did exit the residence and was taken into custody with the aid of the K-9 unit,” added Brooks. “Fortunately none of the police officers were injured in the ordeal and the male was taken into custody without further incident.

He was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and then taken to jail.

The Delta man, 51-year-old Robert Knight, has been charged with failing to stop for police, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats.
