Delta municipal election nominations closed - more than 35 candidates for mayor, council and school board

It's official. Nominations for Delta council and school board elections closed at 4 p.m. today (Friday) and it looks like the race is on. After a non-election in 2008, the race for seats on school board is heating up.

After a non-election in 2008, the race for seats on school board is heating up.

A total of 20 candidates are vying for the seven seats at the board table.

Incumbent chair Dale Saip is leading the Delta R.E.A.L. (Responsible Education and Academic Leadership) Team, which also includes fellow incumbent trustees Brenda Bennett-Schneider and Simon Truelove, as well as retired teacher Nick Kanakos.

Trustees Laura Dixon, Fabian Milat, who is also running for Delta council, and Janet Shauntz are all running again.

Newcomers Carroll Allan, Andy Basi, Carleen Bazowsky, Donna Burke, Pat Dyer, Carol Johnson, Sue Lloyd, Andrew Maas, Michael Patrick Macumber, Julie Sanders, Brad Sherwin, Malcolm Smillie and Val Windsor have all added their names to the ballot as well.

In the race for Delta council, voters will have 13 candidates to choose from in filling the six available council seats.

Incumbents Robert Campbell, Scott Hamilton, Bruce McDonald, Ian Paton and Anne Peterson are all looking for another term on council. Newcomers Sylvia Bishop, Scott Broderick, Andrew Conley, Neil Corbett, Garth Cuthbert and Ranjit Heer are all vying for one of the six council seats. Former councilor Jeannie Kanakos is making a run to return to council.

It's a four-way race for mayor with incumbent Lois Jackson taking on former councilor Krista Engelland, current councilor Heather King and John Meech.

The election is slated for Nov. 19.
