Delta Museum future on agenda

The board of the Delta Museum and Archives Society is holding a special general meeting next Wednesday to discuss the future role of the society.

A letter last month from society chair Barbara Baydala to members confirmed the Corporation of Delta has proposed to the museum board that a new facility be located on the first floor of the former courthouse building in Ladner's civic precinct, adjacent to the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room.

She also noted that one of the terms is that the municipality assume dayto-day operations of the museum and archives. It essentially means taking control from the society.

If Delta assumes control, the unionized museum staff would become employees of Delta and could benefit from enhanced salary and benefits, she said.

The museum would be under the purview of the parks, recreation and culture department. However, a motion to be voted on by members next week states: "The society would remain the owner of the collection, i.e. the entire holdings of objects and materials both present and future."

The museum has closed its exhibition space at the former municipal hall building on

Delta Street in Ladner Village and is in the process of moving its collection to temporary storage.

Delta received federal funding to help renovate the building, which will be converted to other community uses.

The meeting takes place Wednesday, April 27 at the administrative office/annex at 4918 Delta St.

Registration starts at 7 p.m. and the meeting commences at 7:15 p.m.
