Delta police, bylaws pro-active ensuring holiday health order compliance

Province imposed stricter last-minute regulations for New Year’s Eve

Things were relatively quiet in Delta, unlike Surrey where the RCMP issued thousands in fines on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day after receiving almost 30 calls about non-compliance of COVID-19 health orders.

Delta didn’t have a problem with rule breakers during the holidays.

That’s according to Mayor George Harvie who gave the Optimist an update on how many homeowners and businesses were found to be in non-compliance of the provincial health ordered COVID-19 restrictions.

Harvie said Delta police and bylaw officers did numerous pro-active checks on licensed premises and liquor stores to see whether they were complying with health orders.

“Police took the opportunity to do some education, but overall no significant concerns were noted,” said Harvie. “They also had five calls from the public to do COVID-related checks that night. No violation tickets were handed out and there were no egregious concerns noted.

“Bylaws received two COVID-related calls on Dec. 25 for private residences. These were very small in nature with a couple of neighbours or friends meeting outside. Warnings were issued in both cases by DPD.

“On New Year’s Eve, bylaws visited 15 businesses (bars/restaurants) who all had a high level of compliance. Two businesses received reminders to have staff keep their masks on at all times.”

Additional checks on the New Year’s weekend met with a high level of compliance and no additional complaints of private parties were reported to bylaws, added Harvie.
