A section of River Road between Highway 99 and Tilbury is closed after a fatal single vehicle crash early this morning.
Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow said police were called to 62B Street (which turns into River Road heading east into Tilbury) and 60 Avenue at around 6 a.m. Friday after police received several 911 calls about a car in the ditch. When officers arrived on scene, they found a male driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, unresponsive.
Swallow said officers and paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man but he was declared dead at the scene.
Traffic is currently being diverted around the crash site as officers try to piece together what happened. Swallow said there were no witnesses to the crash, so investigators are looking at all possible causes, although the cold weather could have played a factor.
"That area always gets quite icy," she said.
Swallow said the road will be closed for several hours as the investigation continues.
The identity of the victim is not being released at this time.
