Delta police are urging residents to be extra vigilant when picking up their mail after several recent thefts in South and North Delta.

The first incident was reported on Jan. 5 in the 1300-block of Beach Grove in Tsawwassen where a suspect smashed a window of a Canada Post truck stealing mail and packages. The theft occurred at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon.

The suspect is described as a 30-year-old Caucasian male, wearing a dark ball cap and dark clothing.

Public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks said when the suspect was confronted he got into the passenger-side of an awaiting vehicle described as, a dark colored VW Jetta type car.

The second incident occurred on Jan. 7 at 11:50 p.m. in the 4800-block of 57th Street in Ladner.

Brooks said a complainant observed a male breaking into the complex mailboxes. The complainant yelled out to the suspect and he fled in a dark coloured SUV with a spare tire on the back. There were two other males in the vehicle, but the witness provided no descriptions. Mail was also stolen.

No suspects have been identified as of yet in either case.

“These incidents have been happening a different times of the day, so it is difficult to determine whether we have the same individual(s) working or other suspects,” said Brooks. “It’s important for Delta Police to notify the general public so they are not caught unaware and encourage them to engage in the practice of picking up their mail daily whenever possible. The Delta Police appreciates the assistance of the public in observing and reporting, and that said, we encourage them to call us and report, but to be good witnesses and not to engage with the individuals.”

Brooks said Delta police are working with Canada Post to investigate the thefts.

“If people are expecting to receive credit card information, and important package or important papers and they don’t receive them in what they believe is a reasonable amount of time, then please follow up with Canada Post and make a report with them,” added Brooks.

Anyone with information regarding these thefts can contact Delta police at 604-946-4411.
