Delta police searching for missing boater

Amit Naress, 36, of Surrey went overboard in the Fraser River near the Alex Fraser Bridge on Saturday night and has not been seen since.

Delta police are asking for the public's assistance in tracking down a boater who went missing over the weekend after falling overboard near the Alex Fraser Bridge.

At around 9 p.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the Fraser River near the Alex Fraser Bridge to help the Coast Guard after a man felloff a boat..

Amit Naress, 36, of Surrey went overboard and did not resurface while trying to free the boat he was on from the pilings and barges. He was not wearing a lifejacket and is unable to swim.

That night, police and the Coast Guard conducted an extensive search until dark with no success.

"The search resumed the next morning with the Coast Guard using their hovercraft and helicopter, again without success," said Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow.

The RCMP Air One helicopter conducted another shoreline search on Wednesday, but there was no sign of Naress.

"The Delta police do not believe there is any foul play or suspicious circumstances involved in this case," Swallow said.

Delta police continue to investigate the matter as a missing persons case.

Amit Naress is described as an Indo-Canadian male, 5'1" tall with a muscular build and short brown hair. He has a mole on his cheek and nose, as well as two tattoos, a cobra on his left arm and "ASHNEIL" on his right arm. He was wearing a grey Old Navy long-sleeved shirt and fitted jeans when he went overboard.
