Delta police have partnered with ICBC to bring a holiday tradition back this long weekend.

Delta officers will be joining police officers across the Lower Mainland in setting up Counter Attack road blocks this Canada Day long weekend.

"The Delta police believe road safety is a priority all year round, not merely a seasonal event," said department spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan. "Officers and volunteers conduct various initiatives throughout the year, including commercial vehicle inspections, speed, aggressive driving and seatbelt enforcement. These initiatives are carried out for enforcement and educational purposes in an effort to reduce the carnage on our highways."

Starting this long weekend, and continuing throughout the months of July and August, Delta police will be at various locations around the community setting up summer Counter Attack road blocks.

Police are also reminding the public to never get into a vehicle if the driver is not sober and to pre-plan your transportation when heading out for the evening - take a taxi, public transit or have a designated driver, use a volunteer driving organization or arrange to have a family member or friend pick you up.

"When sober these considerations appear to be common sense, however, alcohol is known to impair common sense and judgment," Feenan said. "If you are attending an event where alcohol will be served, make these considerations while you are sober. The life you save just might be your own."

Police are also reminding motorists to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving under the influence.

"Safety on our roads is everyone's responsibility," Feenan said. "Lets all do our part this summer."
