Delta police used lifesaving Narcan/Naloxone in two cases Wednesday where people were overdosing helping to save their lives.

In the first instance, a family member called 9-1-1 when their loved one appeared to be overdosing. Officers administered three doses of Narcan before the individual was revived.

In the second instance, a member of the public contacted police about an unconscious man in a vehicle who was in the company of others. Police located the vehicle and in this case, four doses of Nalaxone were required, and officers additionally performed chest compressions. Fortunately the man eventually revived and was taken to hospital.

“Although an overdose is considered a medical emergency, our officers may be first on the scene, responding to a call for help,” said Delta police. “This is why they are equipped with Nalaxone, also known as Narcan. “The ongoing opioid crisis continues to be a public health emergency, so we want to remind the public about the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. This Act offers legal protection for those who experience or witness an overdose and call 9-1-1 for help. The Act protects against charges of possession of a controlled substance, or breach of conditions regarding possession.”
