The contract award of $178,931 for the playground replacement is on top of new pathway lighting, which to cost $25,000, plus a project contingency of $56,068 that may be used to address existing drainage at the playground.

The City of Delta is moving quickly to replace the destroyed playground at Chalmers Park.

In March, the 76A Avenue playground in North Delta was destroyed by arson, resulting in more than $125,000 in damages.

While the Delta Police Department effectively pursued the case, arresting a male youth, staff in Parks, Recreation and Culture and the finance departments quickly began working towards a replacement.

City council recently approved a staff recommendation to award a contract for the replacement of the playground in the amount of $178,931.

Two playground design options are going out to the community for comment before one will be chosen as the replacement.

Proponents were instructed to submit a minimum of two playground designs, with all design proposals to be priced identically.

The plan is to have a new accessible playground in place in the early fall of 2022.

As a further enhancement to the park for both the safety of residents and to support the security of park amenities, pathway lighting will be added this summer.
