The house made way for a condo complex

The house was owned by a well-known local businessman who was an active community member.

Let’s head back to visit a rather unassuming old house in Ladner that a well-known local businessman from yesteryear called home.

Built in 1940 for the Andy Muir and his family, the house at 4864 51st St. was a relative newcomer compared to many of the heritage structures still standing in the community. It was torn down in 2019.

Andy Muir (1890-1977) married Eva Elizabeth Follis (1900-1983) in 1922, and both were active in the Ladner community.

The couple lived in various homes in Ladner before moving to the house at the corner of 47th Avenue and 51st Street (called Hotham Street back then).

Andy Muir was the liquor vendor in Ladner, running the BC Liquor Store in Ladner Village, starting in 1929. The business was located where the Canadian Legion now calls home at the corner of Delta and Trenant streets.

Previously, Muir owned Delta Garage on Delta Street. Some of the other businesses on the street at the time included the Riverview Hotel, McNeely Hall and the Dennison Shoe Store.

His former house didn’t have much a heritage feel when a later owner in the 1990s installed siding on the structure. In the later years, it had been rented out to various tenants.

The house as well as the Staines House, built in 1939, next door made way for the Delta Green condo complex.
