Three members of the Delta team ham it up for a photographer after winning the top three awards in Delta Rugby. Gerry Salisbury was voted best all-around player by other members of the team. Merle Bruce captured the Ranji Mattu Trophy for most improved player, while Pat Healy netted a plaque for best rookie.

Let’s head back to May 1971 when the Delta Senior Rugby Football Team held its inaugural awards banquet at the city’s new community centre.

The guest speaker was Jim Dunbar, chairman of referees for the B.C. Rugby Union, who gave an enlightening talk of the game of rugby as seen through the eyes of referees, having officiated more than 600 games himself.

Honoured guests included John Grange, charter patron of the club.

One of the many invited guests at the event was Art Swenson as the oldest Delta-born rugby player, having played for King Edward High School in 1914.

Coach Keith Watson accepted the coaching position for the 1971-72 season, much to the gratification of members.
