Vancouver Canucks defenceman Dennis Kearns presents a provincial hockey award to Chuck Westgard in 1974.

Let’s head back to March of 1974 when a pair of North Delta hockey players captured puck awards.

Chuck Westgard took home the top award in the 11-year-old class, while Don MacNeil took the provincial title for 13-year-olds, in a province-wide skills testing program.

The annual program was sponsored by Dairyland.

The Vancouver Canucks presented the pair with awards at the Pacific Coliseum, prior to a Canucks NHL game with the New York Islanders.

Both players were in the North Delta Minor Hockey Association.

The duo was among a group of finalists who went through their paces prior to the game to test their skills.

Thousands of players from 40 associations took part in the competition under the direction of the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association and the UBC School of Physical Education and Recreation.

The Canucks went on to win that game 4-2.
