Delta throwback: Exciting changes at the Pillars Inn

Among the changes announced was a new ‘authentic European dine and dance night’ that featured a different country every two weeks

Let’s head back to September 1967 when changes were announced for the Pillars Inn Resort Motel in Tsawwassen.

Having opened a couple of years prior, the changes included new staff members including hostess Viola Upland, mixologist, or barman, Ed McCall, housekeeper Lilian Nottingham and new head chef Stuart Gardner.

McCall, who had previously been employed at the Dufferin Hotel in Vancouver, was “thrilled about the elegant new bar being built with an exposed wine rack so customers can see the delightful variety of wines offered to them.”

Gardner was “enthusiastic about the delectable new menus coming up at the Pillars Inn. New ideas for breakfasts are already being used, and dinner menus with tasteful different courses are being worked on.”

A new smorgasbord started Sept. 10th that year and was held every Sunday starting at 4 p.m., as well as various family entertainment on weekends.

Noting they had a happy staff, Nottingham said that “they all work together to make the Pillars Inn a special place in Delta.”
